Calpain Wallpaper Commission

Description

Woo! ... Well this one was a challenge... but it was so much fun at the same time ^^

For starters my Adobe Flash decided to crash on me twice while working on this... and once all the drawing was done, I spent no less than 2 hours trying to come up with a nice sciencey, appropriate background until I finally discovered the leatherbound textbook in my collection of textures ^^ I remember grabbing it in a bit of frustration and thinking 'Theres no way this one will work.." but as soon as I dropped it in I loved it. I felt it really added to the dynamic of the picture, lots of energy in its cracking and aging ^^ Just goes to show you never know what will work for a piece, so ... never ...judge a book by its cover? (I'm sorry ^//^)

Like the title says this is a commission for Calpain, who I was introduced to after he wrote a wonderful little piece for me and my work as part of his artist spotlights over on Equestria Daily ^_^ He's a super nice guy and I wanted to a great job capturing his character's scientific roots ^^

I'm a gal who loves her science, so building the little chemistry setup for this one was so much fun and I do so hope that Calpain likes the first of his two commissions that are coming down my pipeline ^^

Also words of advice to any junior scientists out there: Always wear safety goggles when dealing with laboratory equipment and never mix acids and bases at crotch level. ^//^

okie <3 I'm done rambling! Thanks for reading everypony

All My Love,

I've seen and made quite a few wallpapers, and I have to say I rather like of this one.

Let's start with the vision. From the looks of it, the (wood?) texture looks like something I would expect to see on a school's desk, which plants the feel of learning and creativity in my head. If this is what you were going for, to give the wallpaper that "learning" or "educational" feel to it, it really works well.

The only thing I'm not big on is the way the texture changes on the left-hand side, when it doesn't do the same on the right. It's asymmetrical and messes with the balance of the composition as a whole.

Originality is your strongest point. Usually when I think of science/chemistry stuff, Twilight comes to mind. The fact that you used an OC instead and gave him a lab coat works so much better; it gives us something different and original that we've not seen before, and would not have expected.

The Technique is pretty good overall. I like the fact you were able to blend the character vector and the wood texture together seamlessly. From the looks of it, I can tell you used either channel masking or a simple layer overlay effect (soft light, overlay, etc). The one thing I don't like is the watermark, not that it is bad or anything, but because of how it is placed upon the wallpaper. It's brighter than the main focus, which is the character, and that hurts the design a bit.

I would recommend putting it more in the corner and toying around with ways to blend it in with the wood texture, to make it literally become PART of the wallpaper, rather than something OVER the wallpaper.

The Impact of the piece is extremely effective. Once again; it gives the feel of learning and education, which works well with the idea of a scientist or a chemist.

Overall, I give it a 4 out of 5 overall! Very well done, congrats on the EQD feature, and I hope to see more from you in the future! <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b…" width="15" height="15" alt=":D" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=":D (Big Grin)"/>
